    Description

Up for sale is a very cool vintage "Program of Events" for the 1969 Mississippi Arts Festival.  The 6th Annual event was held during the week of (Monday), April 14 through (Sunday) April 20 and IT WAS A REALLY BIG DEAL!  The Festival offered top flight entertainment over a very broad range of genres.  Among the highlights of the 1969 Festival were:
-Pop singer Petula Clark performing with the Jackson Symphony Orchestra
-Actor Hal Holbrook performing his signature one man show
    , Mark Twain Tonight.
    -A full scale opera (
    La Traviata
by Giuseppi Verdi) starring the famed Montserrat Caballe and Robert Merrill
-A Literary Seminar conducted by Mississippi writer Ellen Douglas (the pen name of Josephine Ayres Haxton), who would go on to write
    Apostles of Light
(nominated for the National Book Award)
-An Organ Seminar by Dr. Alec Wyton, organist and choirmaster at St. John the Divine in Manhattan, New York City
    -
    The Beggar's Opera
presented by The Opera Theatre, University of Mississippi
    -
Stop The World, I Want To Get Off
presented by the Department of Theatre, University of Southern Mississippi
The events just mentioned were just a very small portion of the very wide ranging program that included an extensive children's program and many local musicians and bands, representing virtually all styles of music.  There was also an Art Exhibition and a Literary Competition.  (NOTE:  In the publication I am selling, the Art Exhibition is presented in a two page overview.  There was a separate detailed catalog for the exhibition.  I am NOT selling that catalog.)
    According to the book
    Art in Mississippi,
    1720 - 1980
, by Patti Carr Black, the Mississippi Arts Festival was "a signal event in Mississippi's cultural history .... Never had there been such a multifaceted presentation offered to the public, nor so much involvement and collaboration by the arts, business, and volunteer communities."  It was inaugurated in 1964 by the Jackson Civic Arts Council.  The following year, the festival was taken over by the Jackson Junior League.  By 1969, it had grown to the point that it incorporated under its own name.  (The Junior League still played a core role, however.)  The Festival was "so remarkable (in its) scope, quality, and intention that the
    New York Times
sent a reporter ...."  The Mississippi Arts Festival continued for a total of 14 years, before disbanding.
There are hundreds and hundred of names in the 1969 Program of Events.  If you would like me to check whether your ancestor or loved one's name appears, please feel free to contact me.  I will attempt to verify whether that name appears, before you place a bid.
Please see above for complete description of condition and for photos.  Sold as is.
