1892 John L. Sullivan vs. James Corbett PSA "Authentic" Tickets From the John Seaward Collection.
On September 7, 1892 at the Olympic Club in New Orleans, World Heavyweight Champion John L. Sullivan attempted his final title defense against "Gentleman" Jim Corbett. It was the first Heavyweight Championship to be fought with gloves, thus closing the door on the bare-knuckle era. The youthful Corbett was a skillful boxer and entered the ring in top condition. Sullivan, on the other hand, hadn't fought in three years and drank profusely. Corbett danced and dodged the bull rushes of the older Sullivan and eventually wore down the slower, out of shape champ en route to a twenty-first round knockout.
One of the most important bouts of the nineteenth century is offered here. It exhibits typical handling wear and age-toning, and are slabbed "Authentic" by the experts at PSA.
Additional provenance for this item being that this ticket originates from the family of the Olympic Club's steward John T. Seaward. The PSA slab also indicates this originated from the John T Seaward family.
